About Happy Holistic Homestead
Holistic: Characterized by comprehension of the parts of something as intimately interconnected and explicable only by reference to the whole.
In our modern world we are facing rising rates of mental and physical disease. At Happy Holistic Homestead we do not believe that all of this illness appears out of nowhere, we believe in cause and effect. We also believe wellness is our natural state. Unfortunately, we have become so far removed from our food system and the production of everything that we put in and on our bodies that we are losing sight of how truly connected we are to the earth and to each other. Our Mission is to educate and empower people to make better choices regarding their health. This will contribute to the improvement of the planet as a whole. We do not believe we can poison water, crops, and livestock and then live in that same poisoned environment in a state of health. We believe everyone can be involved in the production of their own food or self care products. We want to bring back information about food production,  plant identification, herbal medicine, and animal husbandry. Information that used to be common to people, blow the dust off- and make it common once again. Our goal is that all people would have the necessary knowledge to survive on this planet and that this knowledge would help to cultivate a higher reverence for plants, animals, and our bodies. The modern food system in America is not sustainable. When people see videos of how animals are living on large production farms  it makes them want to become vegan. When they are made aware of the amount of poison being poured onto our food crops (even rainwater tests positive for pesticides now, they are so pervasive in our environment) it makes them feel helpless. The big is not working,  so let’s  go smaller. Let’s  go local. Let’s bring back the idea of a homestead and apply it to a large scale. Builders, land developers, and city planners should be thinking in those terms as well. We need to think holistic. The garbage we throw away and the poison we pour into the ground and in waterways doesn’t disappear, it directly affects us. We need to think happy. How can we have true happiness and well being when we are fighting disease? We do not need to produce everything ourselves, we can share this responsibility with our neighbors and then trade with each other, restoring a sense of tangible in-the-flesh community that has been lost. This is not some idealistic notion of the way things could be. It is how things have to be to protect our planet and our bodies. It is a necessary shift in our thinking. We want to help people make this  shift.
About The Founder
Hello! I am Roxanne, founder of Happy Holistic Homestead and author of Holistic Homesteading: A Guide to a Sustainable and Regenerative Lifestyle. I began my higher education studying early childhood education and psychology. Part way through earning my degree I discovered my passion for nutrition and health. I studied holistic nutrition, life coaching, Chinese medicine, and herbalism at the Southwest Institute of Healing Arts. Once I became a mother, I became even more vigilant about food and health and my passions grew to include homesteading, mostly because of how much my children enjoyed it. Â I am now a mother of five on a working homestead that includes sheep, goats, chickens, guinea hens, ducks, sometimes cows, rabbits, and pigs, and of course, dogs and cats. We also grow a large garden. My dream 15 years ago was to pursue a degree in medicine and become a naturopath, but many states do not recognize naturopaths as real doctors. I thought, how can I reach out to the most people and help them learn about these topics I am so passionate about? So this website was born. I want to share information with people about health and homesteading in a way that makes them feel empowered, not overwhelmed. I want to take certain ideas about food and health (for instance the fact that they are intrinsically linked) and make them common knowledge. I will do this with the information I offer on this site, and I am also available for private consulting in which I can offer wellness coaching, personalized meal planning, and homestead and permaculture planning and design. It is one of my dreams that within my lifetime homesteading skills will be taught as part of the school curriculum in the United States. I also want to see a return to the days when most people grew a vegetable garden. Another dream I have is that every household would grow some of their own food or make some of their own self care products. We can all grow something, even if it is simply some sprouts on your kitchen counter. Are you already growing things or making some of your own products? Share your journey with us by tagging us @happyholistichomestead on Instagram and using the hashtags #plantwhereyouareplanted and #homesteadingheroes.
We would love to follow you on your journey to sustainability and also share your achievements with our readers to encourage them in the pursuit of healthier lifestyles and a better world!
If you read this far then maybe you are passionate about the same things I am. Or maybe you are wanting your life to take a healthier direction, or to begin a homestead or vegetable garden and you are unsure of how to take the first step. I would love to. hear from you! Are there any topics you feel would be particularly helpful to you? Let me know and I will do my best to cover them.
