Field guides:

We use a ton of field guides. They are a large part of our “curriculum.” We spend a lot of time outside, I am a firm believer in children spending a majority of their time outside. When I first began purchasing field guides I had no idea how much my children would love them. They have spent countless hours pouring over them, long before they have been able to read. They are able to identify many species of, well, everything. And when we see an unfamiliar species of something they are excited to try and use the guides to figure out what it is. Along with the Audobon guides, I also recommend buying field guides that are specific to your state/region. And when we travel we always get a local guide to the animals and plants for wherever we go. Cultivating the habit of attention when children are young is a way to ensure they will become life-long learners. Knowing the names of things in nature helps them stay alert and engaged with their surroundings and feel secure in natural settings.

Understanding a childs learning style can be very helpful when you are their teacher!
