Homesteaders may not be the easiest bunch to shop for. The ones I know generally have less of a penchant for “stuff”. Homesteaders are typically practical people who do not feel the need to conform, so whatever the must have item of right now is, it is probably not a great fit. Here are some gift ideas for the homesteader in your life, or even those who dream of a homestead. I wrote a post a while back about some of the best books for homesteaders, these books are focused on those who are beggining their journey. If you are looking for sustainable gift giving ideas, you can find some great ones by clicking here. In this article you will find more book options plus some other fun things that will make great gifts. I have the list broken down by interest. For Chicken People
T-shirts are always fun. This one comes in several colors and in mens, womens, and children sizes.
I have this apron myself and can I just say I absolutely love it. It makes collecting eggs a breeze and leaves both of my hands free.
If aprons are not the gift recipient’s thing, an egg basket is a must for collecting more than a few eggs at a time. You could collect eggs in a regular woven basket, but those are a lot harder to clean when eggs get broken.Â
What about a lovely place to keep those eggs after collecting them? Did you know eggs do not need to be stored in the refrigerator until after they are washed? Eggs come out with a coating that we cannot see that protects them from the invasion of unfriendly bacteria. Only once the eggs are washed do they need to be refrigerated.Â
If eggs must be stored in the regrigerator because they had to be washed, or there are so many they cannot be eaten fast enough, then here are some pretty cartons. These are also great for gifting eggs to friends and family.
A magazine every month about nothing else but chickens?! Nothing could make a true chicken person happier.Â
Can gardening and free range chickens be compatible? Jessi Bloom, an award winning landscape designer, says yes. This is a wonderful book for chicken lovers who would also love to grow things.Â
Maybe the person you are shopping for is just thinking about getting hens. Here is a great book they can read to learn more.Â
For a young person wanting to start their own flock:Â
For Goat People
Not sure what a stress ball has to do with goat ownership? What that tells me is that you have never owned goats.Â
Here is a lovely stationary set that can be used to write letters of apology to the goat person’s neighbors when their goats escape and eat someones vegetable garden or award winning rose bush.
This coffee mug is great  for those who are enthusiastic about goats and warm beverages, and also have a sense of humor.Â
For those who would like to learn more about caring for goats.
For DIY People
This is an excellent book for those people who love to build things themselves.
Mother Earth News is a great resource for anyone interested in anything homestead-y, whether they are already doing it, or just have dreams, they will find something interesting here.Â
My husband uses his Gerber MP600 multiple times a day around our farm. We recently replaced it after it was lost (he had his first one for over 20 years), during the few months he went without his multi-tool it’s absence was noticed constantly. I would say the only reason it took us so long to replace it was that we were holding out hope it would be found. This particular version of the Gerber (there are many incarnations) is still manufactured in America and is standard issue for United States military.Â
For Gardening People
Yes, Baker Creek Seeds does offer a free version of their catalog and it is also great, but it does not compare to this beauty. It is full color, has so many seed varieties, and even has a few articles. For a person who loves growing things there is not much that is more exciting in the winter than pouring over seed catalogs and dreaming of Spring. I look forward to recieving this catalog every year more than anything else that comes in the mail.Â
A good garden cart is a must on the homestead. Some people prefer solid sides and others like the metal carts with sides that can be dropped down or removed. This is great for hauling square bales of hay, but I like the solid sides. Here are both designs.Â
This is an excellent resource for growing techniques and seed saving.Â
This is technically a bead organizer, but it works great to organize collected seed.
A place to store all those little seed packets.
I have been using a biodynamic planting calendar for years. I can’t always stick exactly to the dates but I love having it all layed out for me so I dont even have to think about it.
A nice way to keep all the gardening tools together.
Speaking of garden tools, here is my favorite:
Kid People
Yes, some homesteaders have children. Here are a few gift ideas for those little homesteaders in training.Â
